What to Pack for Umrah: The Complete UK Checklist

What women should wear and pack

Women don't wear a special Ihram garment — any loose, modest clothing in any colour is acceptable, covering everything except the face and hands. Comfortable, breathable abayas, a couple of headscarves, and non-slip flat shoes for long periods of walking are worth prioritising.

Everyday clothing

Loose, breathable clothing suited to Saudi Arabia's heat, even outside of Ihram
A light jacket or shawl for air-conditioned spaces, which can get surprisingly cold
Comfortable walking shoes — you'll cover more distance on foot than you expect
Modest swimwear if your hotel has separate-gender pool facilities

Health and toiletries

Any prescription medication, in its original packaging, with a spare supply
A basic first aid kit: blister plasters, painkillers, rehydration sachets
Hand sanitiser and wet wipes — invaluable in crowded spaces
Sun protection: sunglasses, a cap or shawl, and high-factor sunscreen
A reusable water bottle for Zamzam water and general hydration

Pack light, pack comfortable, and prioritise good footwear — you'll be on your feet far more than you expect.

Documents and money

Passport, visa confirmation, and printed booking references
Travel insurance details
A mix of Saudi Riyals in cash and a card that works well abroad
Photocopies of key documents stored separately from the originals

Family and children essentials

Snacks and entertainment for the flight and any waiting time
A lightweight buggy if travelling with toddlers, for the long walks between sites
Extra changes of clothes for young children
Any comfort items that help children settle in unfamiliar surroundings

Small extras that make a big difference

A tasbih (prayer beads) or digital tasbih counter for Tawaf and Sa'i
A lightweight travel prayer mat for the flight and hotel room
A small day bag for carrying essentials to and from the Haram
A portable phone charger — you'll use your phone more than usual for navigation and duas

What to leave at home

Avoid over-packing scented cosmetics you won't use in Ihram, excessive electronics you won't need, and anything you'd be devastated to lose — crowded environments mean valuables are best kept minimal and secure.

Ihram is only worn while in the state of Ihram, from the Miqat until Tahallul. Before and after that, normal modest clothing is fine, so pack for everyday wear too.
