Understanding ATOL Protection: Why It Matters for Umrah

You'll see "ATOL protected" mentioned throughout UmrahCompare, and it's worth actually understanding what it means rather than just treating it as a badge. It's the single most important thing to check before you hand over a deposit for a flight-inclusive Umrah package.

What is ATOL?

ATOL — the Air Travel Organiser's Licence — is a UK financial protection scheme run by the Civil Aviation Authority. It applies to travel businesses that sell flights as part of a package. If an ATOL-protected company stops trading, the scheme exists to get you home if you're already travelling, and to refund money you've paid for a trip that hasn't happened yet.

Why it matters specifically for Umrah

An Umrah package is almost always flight-inclusive — flights, hotels and transfers sold together as one price. That combination is exactly what ATOL exists to protect. Without it, if an agency went out of business between you paying and you travelling, you could be left with no flights, no hotel, and no way to get your money back.

What ATOL does not cover

  • Hotel quality or standard falling short of what was described
  • Poor service from the agency or ground handlers
  • Disputes over what was verbally promised versus what was written down
  • Your own decision to cancel for personal reasons (that's what travel insurance is for)

ATOL is financial protection against the business failing — not a quality guarantee. Keep that distinction in mind so you know which problem needs which safeguard.

How to check an agency's ATOL number yourself

Don't just take an agency's word for it. Ask for their ATOL number directly, and check it against the CAA's own public ATOL holder list before you pay anything. Every agency in the UmrahCompare partner network is required to hold valid ATOL protection, but it only takes a minute to confirm it yourself, and doing so is good practice with any agency you're considering — not just ones you found through us.

A legitimate agency will never hesitate when you ask for their ATOL number. Hesitation, or being told it's "not needed for this package," is a clear warning sign.

Red flags to watch for

  • Reluctance to confirm or provide an ATOL number when asked directly
  • Pressure to pay the full amount immediately rather than a standard deposit
  • Requests to pay into a personal account rather than a business account
  • Prices significantly below every other quote you've received, with no clear explanation why

FAQs

If the agency you booked with stops trading before or during your trip, ATOL protection covers getting you home if you're already abroad, and refunding money you've paid for a trip that hasn't happened yet.
No. ATOL is financial protection against an agency failing as a business, not a quality guarantee. Complaints about hotel standard or service are a separate matter, handled directly with the agency or through consumer protection routes.
Only agencies with valid ATOL protection are included in our partner network. It's still worth confirming the number yourself before you pay a deposit, since UmrahCompare is a comparison and referral service, not the party holding your money.
